Internal Family Systems Therapy

Part of you wants to rest. Another part calls you lazy for even thinking about it. Part of you longs to be close to people. Another part keeps everyone at arm's length. You make a plan in the morning and undo it by the afternoon, and then you turn on yourself for being so inconsistent.

You are not inconsistent. You are many.

What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

IFS Therapy in Toronto

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, starts from a simple and freeing idea. You are not one single self with a pile of flaws to fix. You are made of parts, and every one of them formed for a reason. The harsh inner critic. The one who overworks. The one who people pleases. The part that shuts down when things get hard. None of them are bad. Each one took on a job, usually a long time ago, to keep you safe or loved or in control.

The problem is not the parts. The problem is that some of them are stuck doing jobs they took on when you were far younger, and they have never been allowed to stand down.

In this work, we get curious instead of critical. We turn toward the parts of you that you have spent years trying to silence, and we listen to what they have been carrying. As you build a relationship with them from a place of calm and compassion, something softens. The inner war quiets. You stop being run by the loudest, most frightened parts of you and start leading from a steadier place.

When we work together, there is nothing you need to fix or perform. We simply get curious about what is going on inside you, one part at a time, at whatever pace feels safe. You stay in the driver's seat the whole way. Some parts have been carrying their burdens for a very long time, and we do not rush them. Sessions are held online, so you can do this tender work from the comfort of your own space, and I see clients across Ontario. Many extended health plans cover therapy with a Registered Social Worker, and I offer direct billing to Telus eHealth and Sun Life to keep things simple.

This is tender work, and it is some of the most freeing work I get to do with women. If you are tired of fighting yourself, there is another way. If any of this feels like you, you are welcome to book a free consultation. No pressure. Just a conversation.
