ADOLESCENTS (12+)

Marlo has been working with tweens and teens primarily in the child protection sector, assisting them work through big life challenges at a very precarious time in their lives. She prides herself on being able to get onto their level and build trusting professional relationships wherein youth feel safe to open up about hard conversations.

Marlo understands that being a teenager is HARD, and that having someone to talk to, and help work through issues that is not a parent or authority figure is incredibly helpful. There is always a "why" when a youth is "acting out", "not listening",  or "not being themselves" and she works hard to create a space where youth can explore that "why". As someone that went through her own personal traumas as a  teen, Marlo knows the importance of working through challenges in the moment rather than letting them be left unresolved and fester into maladaptive coping skills.

Working with adolescents is based on the assumptions that this is a developmental stage where young people increasingly seek autonomy from their parents. Therapy sessions are confidential to the adolescent unless consent is provided.

However, parents/caregivers are active members of therapy and participate in parent coaching sessions to learn how to best support the youth using Emotional Focused Family Therapy (EFFT).

WHAT TO EXPECT

In the initial meeting I meet with the parent/caregiver, without the child being present, and I collect details regarding the current situation and concerns, and your goals for counselling.

After this initial session, I map out the best preliminary course of action for you and your child/adolescent. This could include child therapy, family therapy or only parent therapy if the child is not willing to or ready to participate.

Although we try our best to prepare for parenthood, no one is perfect! My practice is based on a NO BLAME premise stemming from the fact that parents are trying the BEST THEY CAN given their current circumstances.

I meet with parents to discuss their current concerns and their goals with respect to their child(ren). These sessions always involve support for the parent, but also include psychoeducation on topics such as aggression, anxiety, attention problems, burnout, digital addictions, etc .
